Valerian is one of Nature’s gentlest, non-toxic, non-addictive sedatives. Finlandia’s Valerian product is a fluid extract and is 3-5 times more potent than the usual tincture. This herb has been valued as an antispasmodic and sleep aid since the Ancient Greek civilization. The first known records reported its use in the treatment of seizures. "Since Hippocratic times, Valerian has been used for a wide range of conditions but especially for its calming effect." Valerian was also used successfully during World War 2 to treat shell and air-raid shock without depressing vital functions or mental activity.

An unusual feature of valerian is that valerian root and leaves are a cat attractant similar to, and as safe as, catnip. Anecdotal reports claim that valerian is also attractive to rats - so much so that it had been used to bait traps.
Valerian is a perennial flowering plant, with heads of sweetly scented pink or white flowers that bloom in the summer.
 
Native to Europe and parts of Asia, Valerian has been introduced into North America. The flowers are frequently visited by many fly species, especially hoverflies. It is consumed as food.
